The forced deportation of Ukrainian children is a “war crime.“
United Nations investigators have determined that the forced deportation of Ukrainian children by Russia qualifies as a war crime. On Friday, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The warrant says President Putin was “allegedly responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.”
The court said there “are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr. Putin bears individual criminal responsibility… [for] his failure to exercise control properly over civilian and military subordinates who committed the acts.”
Officials in Ukraine say more than 16,000 specific children have been identified as deported to Russia. The UN investigators wrote that “hundreds of thousands of children have been transferred from Ukraine to the Russian Federation“ since Ukraine’ was invaded by Russia just over a year ago.
